Our Dogs are not just pets, they are family members. Dogs are loved by world leaders, celebrities and everyday people. They save lives, provide assistance, deter burglars, work the land, star in movies and are an integral part of everyday life.
Dog ownership teaches children responsibility and helps them develop their social and nurturing skills. From providing simple companionship, stress relief, curing loneliness and as a means of social interaction, it is widely accepted that Dogs provide us with extensive benefits. It’s time to celebrate our dogs!
The Dog Lovers Show is a world-first event that will encapsulate the friendship and unconditional love that we share with our self-proclaimed ‘best friends’.
The iconic Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton provides the perfect venue for this ‘Festival of the Pooch’, which will be held from Friday 3 to Sunday 5 May. Event Management International are organising the event and are expecting in excess of 20,000 dog lovers to attend from around Victoria to celebrate them like never before.
Dog lovers will be entertained and educated with a range of interactive opportunities including a Puppy School, Breed Showcase and Rescue Dog Adoption Zone (http://dogloversshow.com.au/rescue-dog-zone/) with a major Dog Art Portrait Competition (The ‘Archie Bark’ Prize), Expert Seminars, high-energy demonstrations in the Main Arena that will WOW visitors, over 200 Exhibitors and loads more! It’s the perfect day out for any dog lover (you don’t even need to own a dog!) as this family-friendly event will not only put a smile on the face of every visitor but ensure they leave with a greater respect and understanding for the pooch in their life. The 18th annual RSPCA Million Paws Walkwill be held across Australia on Sunday 19 May. Whether you have pets or you just want to have a fun day out, you’re invited to join the walk with thousands of animal lovers and their furry friends. This year the RSPCA needs your help to raise over $497,000 to help support all areas of their work across Victoria including animal shelters, Inspectorate, clinics and adoption centres.
They’re excited to announce if you register to walk on 19 May or fundraise online, you could win a new Mitsubishi Mirage valued at over $16,000. It’s all thanks to their friends at Eastside Mitsubishi.
There is a walk for everyone with 17 different walk locations across Victoria. So slip on your walking shoes, get as many of your friends involved as possible, and come and enjoy a great day out!

Pets in the Park, Brimbank’s annual Pet Expo for pet owners and animal lovers attracts some 2,000 visitors annually. It will feature microchipping at discounted prices, pet registration, dog agility demonstrations and a bevy of stalls with products, services and information for responsible pet owners. Four Paws K9 Training from Keilor Downs will be on hand to offer handy tips on how to modify dog behaviours such as barking, lunging, aggression and other problem behaviours.
Registration of all cats and dogs over three months old is compulsory under the Victorian Domestic Animals Act and since 2007, newly registered cats and dogs must also be microchipped and de-sexed. Microchipping ensures a speedy reunion with lost pets.
De-sexed and microchipped pets can be registered on the day at no charge, provided owners can provide evidence of microchipping and de-sexing. There's also pet grooming, demonstrations on how to safely greet a dog and Wicked Wildlife will be there with a selection of their extensive collection featuring over 100 Australian Animals. Get up close and personal with a whole posse of cute and fuzzies including possums, wombats and wallabies and the occasional croc!
Pets in the Park is also a fun, family-orientated event with lots of fun activities at no charge to keep kids amused including a giant jumping castle, an animal farm, face painting with Busy Fingers, plaster painting, great give-aways and more. Don't miss it.

After visiting the Bank St Twilight Markets, we decided on a meal at Hunky Dory in South Melbourne. It was a great choice! We grabbed an outside bench table, and were greeted by a dog-loving waiter. There was a Fox (FM) party going on across the road, so there were tunes blasting from the rooftop and lots of passers-by.
Hunky Dory is on busy Clarendon St, so that may be something to consider if your dogs don't like road noise. It was a relaxing, welcoming ambience when we went though, and the dogs were happy to be there, chilling out on a warm night.
We had heard a lot about this 'Fish'n'Chip' shop, but were blown away by the quality of service and food we received. The photos really speak for themselves. We will definitely return, to try out more of the menu and hopefully gatecrash another Fox party from afar ;)

If you already have your puppy and were unaware of puppy farms and backyard breeders, start making others aware. Gypsy was a pet shop puppy, Poppet a rescue. I have blogged about this on numerous occasions. The more informed I become, the more I need to inform others about ethical breeders and rescue. We all find out about puppy farms at some point - it is what we do with that information that counts. Holding onto it doesn't help those friends, family and associates who may not know and be considering getting a puppy. We need to voice this knowledge so others can be informed and make educated decisions.

Please watch the short clip below as some online traders, particularly when it comes to selling puppies, are deceiving. If you intend to buy a puppy this Christmas, make sure you can meet the parents, at their home - otherwise it can be assumed you are supporting this unethical and immoral, cruel trade. Puppy farmers will have glamourous web pages, but the handover of the puppy will take place not at this so called haven they project online, but at a McDonald's carpark or service station, or if they are feeling generous- they will deliver directly to your home. Don't be deceived by smoke and mirrors.

If you don't have a breed in mind, please consider adopting a beautiful rescue. Many litters are dumped on rescue's doorsteps or as a result of a puppy farm rescue, a pregnant dog will give birth in rescue and her babies will also need to be homed. Rescue groups care about their dogs and ensure the dog/puppy is a match to your family, depending on the age of your children, the space you have available and your lifestyle. Some breeds require much exercise, others love human companionship. It is important not to just pick a breed based on what they can offer you as a family, but also what you can offer them as a family.

Finally, Christmas is a special time with family. It is a lovely time of year to introduce a beautiful new four-legged family member but not spontaneously or without thought. So many puppies are dumped after the novelty has worn off. Dogs are like children. They require discipline, love and routines. They want your attention and care and in return, will give you unconditional love like no other. But they are hard work. They cost far more than the initial adoption or payment. But the added value they are to your life? PRICELESS.

Homeless dogs search for love in the city
Most pet lovers are unaware that pound euthanasia is the leading cause of death among healthy companion animals in Australia. Across the country, around 40% of dogs and 75% of cats who enter pounds and shelters are killed, with resources coming under the most strain during the summer holiday period.
PetRescue is calling on the community to open their hearts and homes to a rescue pet. Supported by their friends atJetpets, they are aiming to find forever homes for 5,000 rescue pets this holiday season.
There will be a display in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, with guest stars Sahara and Dave joining them to entertain the crowds.
An opportunity to meet some awesome adoptable dogs will be hosted in;

Tuesday 11th December at 5pm
Their canine superstars will be strutting their stuff, while PetRescue shares information about the adoption option. Each event will run for approximately one hour, and will be a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the many dogs available for adoption leading up to the holidays.
